“Do you really love me?”
“Where is justice?”
These questions became the basis of disputes between the nation of Israel and God. And maybe, if we are honest, similar outcries appear at the core of our own disputes with the Lord. We grapple with the difficult parts of life, and we begin to question the Author if it.
Instead of dealing with the questions that lay deep within them, Israel chose to ignore their disputes, leaving them unresolved. Disregarding the Truth and not pursuing the God of Truth, they found themselves believing whatever lies made the most sense in the moment:
“It doesn’t matter how I worship God. It’s all about making sure I do more good than bad. God won't judge me. Everyone gets away with stuff anyway. The commandments in the Bible are old and antiquated.”
Into this tangle of anger, apathy, and questioning, the Lord initiated a hard conversation with Israel to seek reconciliation. We see in the book of Malachi that God did not stop pursuing Israel when they struggled to believe and quarreled with Him. Instead, He devotedly led them back to peaceful Truth, where they found rest in His honesty and faithfulness.
The same can be true for us in the midst of doubt and questioning. It is not the disputes that alienate us from our Lord. It is what we do with them.
